Parity - A civil rights victory for recovery, a major step toward expanding access to care

William Cope Moyers, Center for Public AdvocacyHelen Taws, Center for Public AdvocacyNo one was happier than Hazelden's William Cope Moyers on Oct. 3 when a great victory for people seeking help for alcohol and other drug addiction was announced as part of the federal government's financial rescue package.

On that day, President George W. Bush signed into law the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008. The bill essentially puts care for addiction and mental illness on equal footing with other medical and surgical conditions.  read it

Co-occurring disordersWhen addiction and mental health disorders co-occur, the statistics can be troubling. Researchers estimate that about 65 percent of patients in addiction treatment settings also suffer from a psychiatric disorder.
