Alcohol and Drug Use Assessment and Evaluation - Is it addiction?
Some people wonder about their use of alcohol or other drugs but are not convinced there is a problem.

Others secretly worry but minimize the impact of their use by blaming other people or circumstances.

Still others realize there is a problem, perhaps they've been told by family members or an employer that they may "need some help," but aren't sure how serious it might be or what help is available.

At Hazelden, we do not assume a diagnosis of alcoholism or other addiction exists when people contact us for help. We provide expert assessment and evaluation services that provide you with the answers you need to make informed decisions about your own, or a loved one's care.

Also known as screening or evaluation, the alcohol and drug assessment process provides an accurate diagnosis along with recommendations for follow-up or care. Recommendations may include addiction treatment or referrals to physical and mental health practitioners, family counselors, or other helping professionals.

How is an alcohol and drug assessment done?
Within the Hazelden system, an alcohol and drug assessment or evaluation may be a simple phone interview with a clinician or perhaps a face-to-face meeting with a counselor. Evaluations are a more comprehensive process where a client may stay for a period of days at a treatment center and participate in a series of tests. Whatever the form, an assessment is the place to start, and Hazelden can help. All Hazelden locations offer assessment and/or evaluation services.

CAGE is the most widely used test in clinical practice. The test includes four questions and takes only a few minutes.
Have you ever felt you should CUT DOWN on your drinking?

Have people ANNOYED you by criticizing your drinking?

Have you ever felt GUILTY about your drinking?

Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning as an EYE OPENER to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover?

If you answered yes to at least two of the above questions, you are at risk of having a problem with alcohol. There are other diagnostic tools available to help you further assess a problem with alcohol or drugs. Your physician can help you determine if a problem exists.
