The Butler Center for Research is dedicated to improving recovery from addiction by conducting clinical and institutional research, collaborating with other research centers, and communicating scientific findings.

Our vision is to support sustained recovery for all who seek help by way of advancements in knowledge and integration of research into practice.

While we know that treatment is effective, the internal and external processes that produce change are relatively unknown. The more we can objectively describe and measure processes and indicators of change, the better we can target our treatment efforts, work to improve treatment outcomes, and communicate to people about our results. 

Pathways of recovery include: 

• Conducting clinical research to develop state-of-the-art treatment approaches and improve outcomes for people with alcohol and/or drug dependence
• Filling internal requests for clinical data and research information
• Reviewing the scientific literature, analyzes trends, and makes recommendations
• Working to integrate current research findings into practice
• Providing technical consultation to Hazelden staff on matters related to measurement, analysis, and data reporting
• Collaborating with external researchers to conduct treatment studies specific to this population through the Huss Research Chair on Older Adults with Alcohol and Drug Problems
• Conducting research in the areas of continuing care, smoking cessation, , and general program evaluation projects
• Convening a Scientific Panel at Hazelden twice a year to review the Center's research projects. Panel members include: Carlton Erickson, Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin; Lee Ann Kaskutas, Dr.P.H., Alcohol Research Group, California; James McKay, Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania; Jon Morgenstern, Ph.D., CASA, Columbia University; Constance Weisner, M.S.W., Dr.P.H., University of California, San Francisco; and Ken Winters, Ph.D., University of Minnesota.
• Producing a series of one-page Research Updates for professionals and educators on important addiction topics.
• Soliciting nominations and annually presents the Dan Anderson Research Award to honor a researcher whose published work significantly advances the scientific knowledge of addiction recovery.
