Alcohol and drug addiction treatment, alcoholism, drug rehab and lifelong recovery support.
  Why choose Hazelden?
This is the most important question you can ask, and the one with the most answers. Many recovery treatment providers describe themselves in similar ways. In your search for the best option for you or your loved one, terms like interdisciplinary, Twelve Step, and holistic appear. The programs start sounding alike, and you might be tempted to look to the short-term benefits of a program versus the long-term outcomes that a top quality program achieves. To a family in crisis, it can be difficult to assess a program, and making the appropriate choice for care can be stressful.

Why choose Hazelden? The Hazelden advantage -- our experience equals success. For nearly 60 years, Hazelden has been in the business of helping people recover from alcohol and other drug addictions. Hazelden's work in the 1950s and 1960s set the standard and defined the model for all Twelve-Step-based, interdisciplinary treatment programs in operation today. It was Hazelden staff who began teaching the Twelve Steps in a residential setting, and whose ground-breaking work in incorporating psychology and psychiatry, physical health and fitness, emotional and family systems therapies and other approaches, define the "interdisciplinary model" of care.

Why choose Hazelden? Everyday, we change lives, and show people the way to a happier, clean and sober life, and we have proof of our success in our tens of thousands of Hazelden Alumni.

What is Hazelden's "success rate"?
Hazelden bases its work in recovery treatment on solid, scientific research and exacting patient follow-ups. It is the only treatment program that has a research center. For over 20 years, Hazelden has been monitoring treatment outcomes (how patients are doing after treatment) and our data shows success. On average, 54% of our patients maintain an alcohol- and drug-free lifestyle during the entire year after treatment. An additional 35% significantly reduce their use. Between 70 - 80% report substantial improvements in the quality of their lives, with positive changes in relationships with family and friends, job performance, and the ability to handle problems.

Patients, families and other interested people must be careful when comparing the "success rates" of different programs. Treatment agencies differ in how outcomes are measured, and Hazelden reports the percentage of patients who have maintained continuous abstinence for the entire follow-up period. This is an important statistic for comparisons.

Different methods of reporting outcomes make it difficult to directly compare outcome rates from one agency to another. Other agencies might report on the percentage of patients who were abstinent in the 30 days prior to the follow-up phone call. We ask you to look carefully at how others measure their outcomes, and then you will understand the rate of success we achieve at Hazelden.
